Problem

As second language learners, we usually find memorizing vocabulary a drill. The process of memorization is boring and the learned vocabulary is forgettable.

What does current dictionary look like?

For English as second language learners...

"I hate memorizing drills at school. It makes me feel miserable."
"Learning vocabulary is important but boring."
"Even though I look up the dictionary, I forget the words soon."
Most distionary app are so boring. I'd rather ask my friends.

Goal

FUNDI is be a fun dictionary app that people would like to use for learning. The app aims to gamify the vocabulary memorizing drills and make learning more interesting. More importantly, It needs to achieve the goal of learning, not just having fun. FUNDI will enable users to retain their memories longer by incorporating pedagogical theories.

Research

Interview

To better understand how people feel about the current dictionary and their experience of memorizing vocabulary, I interviewed 4 participants who use dictionaries regularly for study or work. They are a 9th grader student, 2 of my English teacher colleagues, and my master’s classmates.

Competitive Audit

In order to construct a concise and solid foundation for FUNDI, I chose three dictionaries to do my competitive audit including Cambridge Dictionary, Merriam-Webster, and Google Translation. The reason why I chose them was (1) they are commonly used by people based on the search engine (2) they have mobile apps. Also, those three are used by my interviewees for study or work.

Key Findings

After the interview and the competitive audit, I generate some key findings and insights.

Define

Design Criteria

I boil down the findings into 3 design criteria:

Increase Fun Elements as MVP
Above all, I want our users to have fun learning vocabulary. This can be done through interactions with personal characters. Users can pick up their monsters and keep them as pets. Their little monsters gain experience every time users learn new words. In this way, users may feel a sense of achievement while learning and get excited to see their monsters’ cute reactions.
Scaffolding for Repeated Practice
According to the article: Increasing the naming speed of poor readers, in order to accomplish great proficiency in English, the number of repetitions needed to learn a word is about 10-15 times. I set each vocabulary to be learned 10 times in our app so as to help our users retain their memory. After 10 times, the words will move from unchecked to checked words.
Log In for the Wordlist Feature
Most users find it annoying to log in and are afraid of receiving scams in their e-mails. For the wordlist feature, I intend to let our users log in to have their personal panel including monsters and wordlist. In order to encourage users to sign up, I set a pop-up wordlist feature after translation in the hope they may feel inclined to log in.

Our Users

Based on the research, I generate 2 personas based on the insights.

Persona photo whose name is Sam. And he is a middle school student who learns English just for exams.
Goals
I'd like to remember more vocabulary for a longer time and get good grades for tests.
I hope learning vocabulary can be fun which may increase my learning interests.
Frustrations
“I can’t memorize vocabulary well. I usually forget them quickly.”
“Learning vocabulary is so boring, but I know it’s important for learning English.”
Persona photo whose name is Joseph. And he is a university student who learns English to adapt to the new environment.
Goals
I need instant translation to know the menu and order dishes in restaurants.
I hope to retain vocabulary longer so I don’t need to look them up again and again.
Frustrations
"I can't understand the menu since there are many unknown words.”
“Even thoughI look up the dictionary, I forget those words very soon.”

Sketches

I did quick sketches to come up with my ideas of my mobile homepage.

Color Palette

In order to motivate users to learn words and find happiness of study, the colors I choose are vibrant.

FUNDI's color palette includes blue, pink, and white

High Fidelity Wireframe

For the first iteration, my primary goal is to validate whether users have fun learning vocabulary, are willing for repeated practice, and willing to log in to the “my wordlist” feature. I also hope to test the usability of the design so that I can improve on it.

Evaluation

User Testing

In order to test our product, I conducted user observations, think-aloud protocols, surveys, and interviews with 5 participants whose mother languages are not English. Here is the overview of the research process:

1. Provides a brief overview of the study and procedure: go through the redesign, a follow-up interview, and a survey. Informs the participant the whole process will be recorded.
2. Invites the participants to practice the think-aloud activity by using the FUNDI app. Encourages the participants to think out loud.
3. Provides the prompts for the participants to accomplish the tasks and observes his/her behaviors while doing.
4. After the testing, asks follow-up questions about the FUNDI app.
5. Stops recording. Thanks to the participants and ask them to do the survey.

Design Iterations

After the user testing, I made some changes in my design based on the users’ feedback.

Word Cards

4 out of 5 users don’t understand the meaning of 10 on the wordlist page and checked/ unchecked words until I explain to them. Also, they report that they want to know more about the explanation of the words rather than just a similar word. Therefore, I changed to the word cards style.

vocabulary practice

2 out of 5 users claim it's stressful to see the 10 times practice shown. Instead of stressing the users out and making them confused, I give up the idea of 10 times practice, changing to feed the monster daily. Users can choose to feed new words or their learned words.

Latest Prototype

Final Design & Rationales

Here’s the latest prototype with some of my updated changes based on user feedback. I will continue refining my design after more usability testings.

translating

Users can either type in the word or scan the word for translation.

Log in & Characters

Users can log in to create their personal learning partners.

first time log in

Users need to feed a new word first when they first time log in.

review learned words

Users can feed a learned word before by clicking the button.

Future

Encourage More Practices

Our app’s core value is to let users practice more times to improve their English. However, most users are tired to study again and again. How can we encourage them to open the app and learn at least a word daily? I list two alternatives for solving the problem: badge notification & email notification.

Photos of badge notification and email notification

Add More Interactions

FUNDI really focuses on the monster feature in order to make learning fun. Also, users suggest the level of fun will affect their willingness to practice more. Therefore, more interactions and connections with our users are needed. For example, there may be special activities or new clothes on Valentine’s Day, playing with friends may be available, etc.

Check With Assessment

Our goal is to let users retain the memory of vocabulary by practicing more times. But how to make sure they indeed practice? I intentionally put the button “feed words” at the bottom of the page in hope that learners will go through everything above such as definitions, thesaurus, and examples. But we still can’t know if they learn. Therefore, a simple assessment should be necessary to check our users’ understanding.
